Almost one person in nine in Jordan is a refugee from the Syrian civil war – almost 700,000 out of 6.7 million. Even though the small kingdom has experience with Palestinian and Iraqi refugees, the influx from Syria has been a severe burden for the resource-poor country. Social tensions are rising. Government and civil society are preventing an outright crisis. In addition to emergency assistance, exemplary, sustainable projects are being carried out – thanks to expertise and financial aid from Europe, among others.
