Humanity is confronting unprecedented existential challenges. The climate crisis is taking an increasingly visible toll, demanding urgent and transformative action. Meanwhile, additional global crises – including pandemics, wars, populism, extremism, and the spread of misinformation in democracies – have created what is often described as a state of polycrisis. In this demanding environment, businesses are under growing pressure to adapt. Heightened regulatory requirements and escalating expectations for sustainable practices are just two of the immediate challenges they face. Simultaneously, we are navigating a technological revolution that is reshaping every aspect of life and work, offering both disruption and opportunity. Against this backdrop, it has become evident that sustainability and digitalization must be pursued in tandem. Digital transformation serves not only as a catalyst for sustainable practices but also as a fundamental driver of innovation, enabling breakthrough solutions and creating synergies.
Our study of twin transformation highlights that companies that systematically and proactively integrate these two megatrends are not only better positioned to meet their environmental and social objectives but also gain a critical competitive advantage. Digital technologies are indispensable for boosting global competitiveness, but they also play a pivotal role in advancing sustainable transformation. These technologies enable the redesign of business models, support resource-efficient approaches such as circular economy practices, and provide tools for precise tracking of sustainability efforts. Technology acts as a powerful driver of sustainable transformation. However, the success of both sustainability and digitalization hinges on the speed and intensity of their implementation – and, ideally, their integration. Addressing these urgent challenges requires entrepreneurial vision and decisive action. Strong examples of such leadership are essential, as hesitation is no longer an option for humanity.
With this study, we aim to contribute to a clearer understanding of twin transformation, highlight the opportunities it presents, and provide actionable recommendations for its implementation. Our goal is to support companies in navigating their path toward a sustainable and digital future. The findings show that actionable and rewarding strategies are within reach for businesses of all sizes.
We are particularly grateful to the companies that shared their experiences and insights with us. We hope these results will serve as a source of inspiration and encouragement, empowering others to actively address the challenges of the future with confidence and resolve.
