Pressemitteilung, , Gütersloh: Heribert Meffert Resigns As CEO Of The Bertelsmann Stiftung, For Health Reasons

Professor Heribert Meffert (68), Chief Executive Officer of the Bertelsmann Stiftung, is resigning his executive position at the end of 2005 for health reasons. At the request of Reinhard Mohn, he will continue to remain closely affiliated with the foundation after this time.

Heribert Meffert: "It was my greatest wish to be able to fulfill my contract, which was extended through mid-2007 last July. However, a recent eye ailment prevents me from doing so. Out of responsibility towards the foundation, I have decided to resign from my position at the end of the year."

After being named Professor Emeritus at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster, Heribert Meffert took on the management of the Bertelsmann Stiftung in September 2002. He finalized its strategic restructuring process, including the formulation of a sociopolitical mission. On the Executive Board he was in charge of Education and Foundation Development projects as well as Communications. Through the end of the year, Heribert Meffert will devote himself in particular to the further development  of the Competence Center for Communities and Regions. Meffert will continue to serve the foundation in a consultative capacity in 2006 and beyond.

"I accept Heribert Meffert's decision with great regret and respect," said Reinhard Mohn, founder of the Bertelsmann Stiftung. "I am grateful for our cooperation which was characterized by mutual trust and his achievements as head of the Bertelsmann Stiftung."

After Jan 1, 2006 and until Gunter Thielen rejoins the foundation in August 2007, the Bertelsmann Stiftung Executive Board will jointly take on Professor Meffert's responsibilities. The exact allocation of responsibilities will be announced at a later date.
