Maia Sandu and Michael Otto to receive the 2025 Reinhard Mohn Prize

The 2025 Reinhard Mohn Prize dedicated to the topic "Strengthen democracy!" is being awarded to the President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu and entrepreneur and philanthropist Michael Otto. In bestowing the prize, the Bertelsmann Stiftung is recognizing both recipients' commitment to defending democracy and making it sustainable. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is expected to attend the award ceremony, which will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2025 at Gütersloh Theater.

Europeans prefer greater independence from the US

A clear majority of Europeans is willing to take greater responsibility for their own interests in a changing world order. This is the key finding of an eupinions survey conducted by the Bertelsmann Stiftung in the 27 member states of the European Union. The figures show a clear shift in opinion in Europe: at the end of 2017, only a quarter of citizens wanted more European engagement.

The sluggish rate of progress made in the energy transition is putting the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero by the middle of the century at risk. On the positive side, with early warning indicators guiding timely and targeted interventions, we can accelerate progress across several domains. A comparison of four European countries shows that Denmark and Norway are making significant strides in transitioning to renewable heating and electricity. Norway is also advancing quickly in the road transport sector. The UK and Germany, on the other hand, continue to face several challenges.

Bodo Uebber appointed new chairman of the Bertelsmann Stiftung Board of Trustees

The Bertelsmann Stiftung Board of Trustees will undergo a reorganization at the beginning of 2025, with manager Bodo Uebber assuming the role of chairman. Uebber, an independent management consultant and former member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, has been a member of the foundation’s Board of Trustees for three years. He succeeds Prof. Dr. Ing. Werner J. Bauer, who is stepping down as chairman of the Board of Trustees after many years of very successful service. Bauer has been a member of the Board of Trustees since 2003 and its chairman since 2011.

Hannes Ametsreiter appointed chairman of the Bertelsmann Stiftung Executive Board

Dr. Hannes Ametsreiter has been appointed the new chairman of the Bertelsmann Stiftung Executive Board. At its most recent meeting, the foundation’s Board of Trustees named the internationally renowned manager as the successor to Dr. Ralph Heck, effective January 1, 2025. After almost five years leading the Bertelsmann Stiftung, Heck will leave its Executive Board at the end of the year by mutual agreement. He will remain closely associated with the foundation and will continue to support its work by returning to its Board of Trustees.

Citizens' Assembly "Forum against Fakes" submits report to Federal Minister of the Interior Faeser

A Citizens' Assembly is submitting its recommendations on how to deal with disinformation to Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) today. The recommendations contain 28 concrete measures for action by policymakers, the media, educational institutions, businesses and civil society. Around 424,000 participants were involved.

This week, the Bertelsmann Stiftung welcomes Christian Mölling and Lucas Guttenberg, two recognized experts on Europe. Christian Mölling is now the new Director of the ‘Europe's Future’ program. Together with Daniela Schwarzer and co-director Malte Zabel, he is responsible for the strategic direction and further development of the Bertelsmann Stiftung's work on Europe. With his experience, particularly in the field of European security policy, Christian Mölling will work with the team to find new answers to the changing security situation and attacks on the continent's political unity. Lucas Guttenberg will continue to develop the work on economic policy issues in the Europe Program as Senior Advisor.

39 young opera talents from 19 nations reach the NEUE STIMMEN final round in Gütersloh

Out of over 1,000 applicants, 21 women and 18 men have made it to the final round of the renowned International Singing Competition. The grand finale in Gütersloh on October 11 is fast approaching. The public will be able to experience the exciting competition on site at the Stadthalle Gütersloh or worldwide via livestream. Deutschlandradio will also broadcast the final concert on October 20.

European Elections: Increased Voter Turnout Expected, von der Leyen Enjoys High Profile

A new "eupinions" survey conducted by the Bertelsmann Stiftung indicates that 60 percent of Europeans plan to participate in the upcoming European elections this June, marking an increase of about ten percentage points from the last election five years ago. The survey also reveals that 75 percent of Europeans recognize Ursula von der Leyen by name and face. This means that the current Commission President, who will be seeking a second term in office after the European elections, enjoys much greater recognizability than her predecessors. At the same time, 70 percent of respondents feel they lack sufficient information about her work to properly assess her performance. This finding points to a potential need for reforms to strengthen the connection between European citizens and the leadership of the Commission.
