Global economic uncertainty: Managing the COVID-19 shock
September 9, 2020 | 09:30 - 10:30 AM EDT | 15:30 - 16:30 CEST
The findings of the Transformation Index BTI 2020 regarding economic transformation had already been bleak as they were. Insufficient economic performance on global average, paired with a looming debt crisis in many countries, was accompanied by only partially free and often unfair market and competitive conditions. This combination had left little hope that the socioeconomic marginalization of large portions of the population due to poverty and inequality could be overcome with any rapidity.
The economic and social fallout of the spread of COVID-19 thus hits many developing economies and emerging markets that are utterly unprepared to cope with such a major shock. Summarizing the social and economic effects of the pandemic and differentiating regionally, this session will provide an outlook on how the crisis in all probability will unfold economically in the months to come. Solution-oriented, it will outline the arsenal of countermeasures available to the international community in cushioning the blow and supporting developing countries to deal with the effects of the pandemic and the economic crisis.
